"Horizontally elongated ellipse-like grouping illusion"

Red concentric checkerboard-like patterns appear to be grouped like horizontally elongated ellipses in the inside of each circle (the upper image). This appearance does not change when the image is rotated through 45 deg (the middle one) or through 90 deg (the lower one).
