"Candlestands"

Each ring is homogeneous in color but appears to be separated in color by a white thin circle. In each ring, the inner region appears to be lighter than the outer one.

This work "Candlestands" depends on the Morrone-Burr-Ross illusion, which is shown below (Morrone et al., 1994). In each rectangle, the right region appears to be darker than the left one, though they are of the same luminance.

When white line segmants are removed from the image above, the Chevreul illusion appears. Each rectangle is homogeneous in luminance, but lightness in the vicinity of the border appears to be different. This lightness illusion makes a scallop-like impression.

Copyright Akiyoshi Kitaoka 2008 (September 3)

This lightness illusion does not depend on lightness contrast, as shown below (there is little difference in lightness).

Lightness assimilation may contribute to this illusion to some extent, as shown below.

"Night and day of the thunder" shows White's dotted lightness illusion (White, 1982).

White's dotted lightness illusion: The left gray square appears to be lighter than the right one, though they are identical in lightness.
