"'Knocked-face' illusion in stereo"

When a pair of eyes and one of mouths appear to leave the original plane in depth, the 'knocked-face' illusion decreases.

----------
One of my students reported that he had come across a web site that exhibits a number of pictures of the "knocked-face" illusion as examples of "double vision". Double vision or diplopia is a disease that patients see a single thing double.

However, I believe that this illusion should not be called "double vision" because visual illusion is not a disease. It would be OK if this illusion was called "the illusion of double vision" for example. This illusion is a new type of anomalous motion illusions such as the Ouchi illusion and "Rotating snakes".

Anyway, I will keep searching who first discovered this illusion. If you know, please let me know! <January 12, 2008>

"Cross-fuser"

The eyes appear to converge.

Motion illusion: The inset of the left image appears to slide rightward while that of the right image leftward.

Binocular stereopsis: When fusing the two images, cross-fusers see the inset in front of the surround. The reversal is observed for uncross-fusers.1)

"Explanation of binocular stereopsis"

When A is nearer to the observer than is B, the image of A is projected to a more temporal part in each retina than that of B (binocular disparity). Based upon this disparity, the brain produces binocular stereopsis of the positions of A and B.
