"White and black horses with the same gray"
The left horse appears white and the right horse appears black; however, their luminance is identical (R124, G124, B124). In the left image, all pixels have 80% blackness, while in the right image, all pixels have 20% whiteness. Under these conditions, achromatic pixels exhibit a luminance of 20%. This is the mechanism behind this lightness illusion.
