"Falling tornado"

The inner three rings appear to contract while the outermost ring appears to expand. When observers approach the image keeping their eyes fixed on the center, the rings appear to rotate counterclockwise1). When observers approach the image keeping their eyes fixed on the center, the rings appear to rotate counterclockwise. The spiral appearance of this image is the Pinna-Gregory spiral illusion2).
