Illusion of lightness #2

since April 25, 2005

"Robot"

The left circle appears to be lighter than the right one, though they are identical in luminance.

"Brightness contrast with anomalous motion illusion"

It appears as if there were two different brightness or color among the smaller squares, but they are identical. The middle row appears to move rightward.

"Fluorescent lumps"

The image appears to glare.

"Ring of simultaneous brightness contrast"

The inner small squares appear to be darker than the outer ones, but they are the same in luminance gradient.

"Lightness and darkness"

Each of lightness and darkness appears to expand slowly.

"Enhanced brightness contrast"

<Copyright free because this image should be a fundamental figure>

It appears that a = d or b = c in brightness, but actually b = d.

by Akiyoshi.Kitaoka 2005 (April 25)

This is not simply brightness contrast because removal of flanks reduces the effect (see the lower panel).

Stimulated by Piers' latest paper1)

If you find any images resembling my image in previous literature, please let me know. I will soon correct the description. Thank you.

"Hi-Vision"

The inset square in the left is the same in lightness as that in the right, but the former appears to be darker.

Takegaki is a bamboo fence, which e.g. surrounds a garden.

"The white circle"
