"Packed earths"

The first and second rows appear to move leftward while the third and fourth ones appear to move rightward.

White gratings appear to expand in the horizontal directions.

"Nipple illusion"

The cones appear to be lighter when observers approach the image fixating at the center. Inversely, they appear to be darker when observers move away from the image fixating at the center. In addition, some observers may notice an expanding illusion.

The cones are not parts of a real picture but are drawn by PC programming. The point is that the radials of each cone are sinusoidally modulated in luminance. It is interesting for the study of perception that this simple drawing can render strong depth feeling.
